케임브릿지 사전은 'phosphorescent'를 "giving off or shining with light, and giving off little or no heat(빛을 발하거나 빛으로 빛나는 동시에 열은 조금 내거나 전혀 내지 않는)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'phosphorescent'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A phosphorescent object or colour glows in the dark with a soft light, but gives out little or no heat(phosphorescent한 물체나 색은 어둠 속에서 은은한 빛으로 빛나지만, 열은 조금 내거나 전혀 내지 않는 것이다)."

"...phosphorescent paint(...인광 페인트)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'phosphorescent'를 "​producing a small amount of light in the dark(어둠 속에서 은은한 빛을 내는)"라고 풀이했다.
