케임브릿지 사전은 'propagate'를 "to spread opinions, lies, or beliefs among a lot of people(많은 사람들에게 의견, 거짓말, 또는 믿음 따위를 퍼뜨리다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The government have tried to propagate the belief that this is a just war(정부는 이것이 단순한 전쟁이라는 믿음을 선전하려고 노력해 왔다)."

"Such lies are propagated in the media(그런 거짓말들을 미디어는 선전한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'propagate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If people propagate an idea or piece of information, they spread it and try to make people believe it or support it(어떤 아이디어나 정보를 propagate 한다면, 그것을 퍼뜨리고 사람들로 하여금 믿거나 지지하게 만들려고 노력하는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"They propagated political doctrines which promised to tear apart the fabric of our society(그들은 우리 사회의 기본 구조를 파괴하겠다고 약속하는 정치적 원칙을 선전했다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'propagate'를 "to spread an idea, a belief or a piece of information among many people(많은 사람들에게 아이디어나 믿음, 정보 따위를 퍼뜨리다)"이라고 풀이했다.
