케임브릿지 사전은 'prostrate oneself'를 "to lie with the face down and arms stretched out, especially as a sign of respect or worship(특히 존경 또는 예배의 상징으로, 고개를 숙이고 팔을 쭉 뻗어 눕다)"이라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'prostrate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you prostrate yourself, you lie down flat on the ground, on your front, usually to show respect for God or a person in authority(prostrate oneself 한다면, 대개 신 또는 권력자에게 존경심을 보이기 위해, 바닥에 납작하게 엎드리는 것이다)."
