케임브릿지 사전은 'garbled'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If words or messages are garbled, they are not clear and are very difficult to understand, often giving a false idea of the facts(단어나 메시지가 garbled하다면, 그것들은 명확하지 않고 이해하기 어려우며, 대체로 사실에 대해 잘못된 아이디어를 전달하는 것이다)"

"There was a strange garbled message on my voicemail(내 음성 메시지함에 이상한, 알아들을 수 없는 메시지가 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'garbled'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A garbled message or report contains confused or wrong details, often because it is spoken by someone who is nervous or in a hurry(garbled한 메시지나 보고서는, 대개 긴장하거나 서두르는 사람이 말했기 때문에 혼란스럽거나 틀린 세부사항을 담은 것이다)."
