케임브릿지 사전은 'disabuse'를 "to cause someone no longer to have a wrong idea(상대가 더 이상 잘못된 생각을 하지 않게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"He thought that all women liked children, but she soon disabused him of that idea/notion(그는 모든 여자들이 아이를 좋아한다고 생각했으나, 그녀는 곧 그런 생각을 바로잡아 주었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'disabuse'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you disabuse someone of something, you tell them or persuade them that what they believe is in fact untrue(어떤 사람에게서 무엇을 disabuse 한다면, 상대가 믿는 것이 사실은 참이 아니라고 말하거나 설득하는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"They thought country people liked to please strangers. I did not disabuse them of this notion(그들은 시골 사람들은 낯선 이들을 즐겁게 해 주기를 좋아한다고 생각했다. 나는 그 생각을 바로잡아 주지 않았다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'disabuse'를 "to tell somebody that what they think is true is, in fact, not true(상대가 참이라고 생각하는 것이 사실은 아니라고 말하다)"라고 풀이했다.
