케임브릿지 사전은 'forfeit'을 "to lose the right to do or have something because you have broken a rule(규칙을 어겼기 때문에 어떤 것을 하거나 가질 자격을 잃다)"이라고 정의했다.

"If you cancel now, you forfeit your deposit(지금 취소하면, 보증금을 잃게 됩니다)."

"These people have forfeited the right to live in society(이 사람들은 사회에서 살 자격을 박탈당했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'forfeit'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you forfeit something, you lose it or are forced to give it up because you have broken a rule or done something wrong(어떤 것을 forefeit 하다면, 규칙을 어겼거나 무엇을 잘못했기 때문에, 그것을 잃거나 그것을 포기하도록 강요되는 것이다)."
