케임브릿지 사전은 'castigate'를 "to criticize someone or something severely(어떤 사람/상대를 심하게 비판하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Health inspectors castigated the kitchen staff for poor standards of cleanliness(위생 검사관은 주방 직원들에게 위생 수준이 낮다고 혹평했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'castigate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you castigate someone or something, you speak to them angrily or criticize them severely(어떤 사람 또는 사물을 castigate 한다면, 그들에게 화가 나서 말을 하거나, 심하게 비판하는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.
