케임브릿지 사전은 'refractory'를 "difficult to control; unwilling to obey(통제하기 어려운; 복종하기를 꺼리는)"라고 정의했다.

"a refractory child(다루기 힘든 아이)"

콜린스 사전은 'refractory'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Refractory people are difficult to deal with or control, for example because they are unwilling to obey orders(refractory한 사람들은 예를 들어 명령을 따르기를 꺼리기 때문에, 대하기나 통제하기 어려운 사람이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"...the situation when a state is confronted by a refractory religious minority(...국가가 통제하기 어려운 종교적 소수와 대면하는 상황)." 

롱맨 사전은 'refractory'를 "deliberately not obeying someone in authority and being difficult to deal with or control(고의적으로 누구의 명령을 따르지 않고 대하거나 통제하기 어려운)"이라고 풀이했다.
