케임브릿지 사전은 'interspersed with something'을 "having something in several places among something else(다른 것 사이에 여러 군데에 무언가를 가지고 있는)"라고 정의했다.

"forests interspersed with meadows and lakes(군데군데 목초지와 호수가 있는 숲들)"

콜린스 사전은 'interspersed'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If one group of things are interspersed with another or interspersed among another, the second things occur between or among the first things(한 사물의 무리가 다른 것들과 interspersed되었거나 다른 것에 interspersed among 한다면, 그 두 번째 것이 첫 번째 것들의 사이에, 또는 가운데에 일어나는 것이다)."
