케임브릿지 사전은 'sift'를 "to shake a powdered substance through a sieve in order to break lumps into very small grains(덩어리를 아주 작은 입자로 부수기 위해 가루로 된 물질을 체에 넣고 흔들다)"라고 정의했다.

"Sift some powdered sugar on top of the cake(케이크 위에 슈가 파우더를 체로 쳐 주세요)."

콜린스 사전은 'sioft'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you sift a powder such as flour or sand, you put it through a sieve in order to remove large pieces or lumps(밀가루나 모래 같은 가루를 sift 한다면, 큰 부분이나 덩어리를 제거하기 위해 체로 치는 것이다)."

"Sift the flour and baking powder into a medium-sized mixing bowl(밀가루와 베이킹 파우더를 체로 쳐서 중간 크기의 믹싱 볼에 들어가게 해 주세요)."

맥밀란 사전은 'sift'를 "to pour a dry substance through a sieve to remove the large pieces(큰 부분을 제거하기 위해 마른 물질을 체에 붓다)"라고 풀이했다.
