케임브릿지 사전은 'plebeian'을 "belonging to a low social class(낮은 사회적 계층에 속하는)"라고 정의했다.

"He used to make fun of what he called her "plebeian origins"(그는 그녀를 '평민 출신'이라고 부른 것을 놀리고는 했다)."

"He retained a plebeian taste in food and drink(그는 음식과 음료에서 평민적인 취향을 유지했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'plebeian'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone describes something as plebeian, they think that it is unsophisticated and connected with or typical of people from a low social class(어떤 사람이 무엇을 plebeian이라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 낮은 사회적 계층에 속하는 사람들과 관련된 또는 전형적으로 그런 사람들처럼 교양이 없다고 생각하는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)하고 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

맥밀란 사전은 'plebeian'을 "typical of someone from a low social class, rather than of someone who is from a higher social class or well educated. This word is usually used in an insulting way(높은 사회적 계층 또는 교육을 잘 받은 사람 같다기보다는 낮은 사회적 계층 출신인 사람의 전형적인. 이 단어는 대개 모욕으로 쓰인다)"라고 풀이했다.
