케임브릿지 사전은 'on a shoestring'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If you do something on a shoestring, you do it with a very small amount of money(어떤 것을 on a shoestring으로 한다면, 그것을 아주 적은 양의 돈을 가지고 하는 것이다)"

"The film was made on a shoestring(그 영화는 아주 적은 예산으로 만들어졌다)."

콜린스 사전은 'shoestring'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A shoestring budget is one where you have very little money to spend(shoestring한 예산은 쓸 수 있는 돈이 아주 적은 것이다)."

"The British-produced film was made on a shoestring budget(영국에서 제작한 그 영화는 아주 적은 예산으로 만들어졌다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'shoestring'을 "having or using a very small amount of money(아주 적은 돈을 가진 또는 사용하는)"라고 풀이했다.
