케임브릿지 사전은 'esoteric'을 "very unusual and understood or liked by only a small number of people, especially those with special knowledge(아주 특이하고, 특히 특별한 지식을 가진 이들, 아주 적은 수의 사람들만이 이해하거나 좋아하는)"라고 정의했다.

"He has an esoteric collection of old toys and games(그는 오래된 장난감과 게임의 마이너한 수집품을 가지고 있다)."

"She has a somewhat esoteric taste in clothes(그녀는 다소 마이너한 옷 취향을 가지고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'esoteric'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something as esoteric, you mean it is known, understood, or appreciated by only a small number of people(어떤 사물을 esoteric하다고 묘사한다면, 그것이 오직 적은 수의 사람들만 알거나, 이해하거나, 진가를 알아본다는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'esoteric'을 "likely to be understood or enjoyed by only a few people with a special knowledge or interest(특별한 지식이나 관심을 가진 적은 수의 사람들만이 이해하거나 즐길 만한)"라고 풀이했다.
