케임브릿지 사전은 'panic-buy'를 "to suddenly buy as much food, fuel, etc. as you can because you are worried about something bad that may happen and that may mean that there is not enough food, etc. available(나쁜 일이 일어날까 봐, 그리고 충분한 음식 등이 없을까 봐 걱정되어 가능한 한 많은 음식, 연료 등을 갑자기 구매하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The situation in the city was tense and residents withdrew cash and began panic buying(도시의 상황은 긴박했고 거주자들은 현금을 인출하고 사재기를 시작했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'panic buy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If people panic buy, they buy far more of something than they need because they are afraid supplies will run out(사람들이 panic buy 한다면, 공급품이 떨어질 것이라고 걱정하기 떄문에 어떤 것을 필요한 양보다 훨씬 많이 사는 것이다)."
