케임브릿지 사전은 'put the kibosh on something'을 "to spoil or destroy an idea or plan(어떤 아이디어나 계획을 망치거나 파괴하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The rain certainly put the kibosh on our plans for a picnic(비는 분명히 피크닉을 가겠다는 우리의 계획을 망칠 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'put the kibosh on'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone or something puts the kibosh on your plans or activities, they cause them to fail or prevent them from continuing(어떤 사람 또는 사물이 당신의 계획이나 활동에 put the kibosh 한다면, 그것들이 실패하거나 그것들이 계속되지 못하게 막도록 야기하는 것이다)." 대체로 영국식이고, 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"Rattray, however, personally showed up at the meeting to try and put the kibosh on their plans(그러나 래트레이는 사적으로 회의에 나타나서 그들의 계획을 망치려고 시도했다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'put the kibosh on something'을 "to stop something from happening; to spoil someone's plans(어떤 일이 일어나지 못하게 막다; 어떤 사람의 계획을 망치다)"라고 풀이했다.
