케임브릿지 사전은 'potentate'를 "a ruler who has a lot of power, especially one whose power is not limited, for example by the existence of a parliament(큰 권력이 있고, 특히 예를 들어 의회의 존재로 권력이 제한되지 않은 통치자)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'potentate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A potentate is a ruler who has complete power over their people(potentate는 그 국민을 상대로 완전한 권력을 가진 통치자이다)."
