[영어 공부] mind-boggling(상상도 안 되는, 도저히 이해할 수 없는, 너무나 놀라운)
'boggle'은 '주춤하다'라는 뜻이다. 정신, 머리(mind)를 주춤하게(boggling) 만드는 거니까 상상이 안 될 정도로 크거나 많거나 해서 놀랍다는 뜻이다.
케임브릿지 사전은 'mind-boggling'을 "extremely surprising and difficult to understand or imagine(극히 놀랍고 이해하거나 상상하기 어려운)"이라고 정의했다.
"She was paid the mind-boggling sum of ten million dollars for that film(그녀는 그 영화 출연을 위해 상상도 안 될 정도로 큰, 몇천만 달러를 받았다)."
콜린스 사전은 'mind-boggling'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is mind-boggling, you mean that it is so large, complicated, or extreme that it is very hard to imagine(어떤 것이 mind-boggling 하다고 말하면, 그것이 아주 크거나, 복잡하거나, 극단적이어서 상상하기 어렵다는 뜻이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.
"The amount of paperwork involved is mind-boggling(그와 관련된, 작업해야 할 서류가 헤아릴 수 없이 많다)."
맥밀란 사전은 'mind-boggling'을 "very large, unusual, or complicated and not easy to imagine(아주 크거나, 흔치 않거나, 또는 복잡하고 상상하기 쉽지 않은)"이라고 풀이했다.
"footballers who earn a mind-boggling amount of money(상상할 수도 없이 큰돈을 버는 축구 선수들)"
