케임브릿지 사전은 'give it a rest'를 "said when you want someone to stop talking about or doing something that is annoying you(다른 사람이 당신을 짜증나게 하는 것에 대해 이야기하거나 당신을 짜증나게 하는 일을 그만하기를 바랄 때 하는 말)라고 정의했다.

"Oh, give it a rest, can't you?(아, 그만 좀 해, 응?)"

콜린스 사전은 'give sth a rest'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone tells you to give something a rest, they want you to stop doing it because it annoys them or because they think it is harming you(어떤 사람이 give something a rest라고 말한다면, 그것이 그들을 짜증나게 하거나 그것이 당신에게 해가 되기 때문에 그것을 그만두기를 바란다는 뜻이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.
