케임브릿지 사전은 'on the skids'를 "to experience difficulties and be likely to fail(어려움을 경험하고 실패할 가능성이 높은)"이라고 정의했다.

"Their marriage seems to be on the skids(그들의 결혼 생활은 악화일로에 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'on the skids'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is on the skids, you believe that it is out of control and certain to fail(어떤 것이 on the skids 한다면, 그것이 통제를 벗어나서 실패할 것이 확실하다고 믿는다는 뜻이다). 인포멀(informal])한 표현이다.

"His career is on the skids(그의 커리어는 한물 갔다)."

"...my marriage was on the skids(...내 결혼 생활은 악화일로에 있었다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'on the skids'를 "in a bad situation and likely to fail(상황이 나쁘고 실패할 가능성이 높은)"이라고 풀이했다.
