케임브릿지 사전은 'split the difference'를 "to accept only part of what you originally wanted when making an agreement with someone, esp. an agreement involving money(특히 돈과 관련한 합의에서 누구와 합의를 볼 때, 당신이 애초에 원했던 것ㅅ의 일부만을 받아들이다)"라고 정의했다.

"You want $50 for the bike and I say it’s worth $30 – let’s split the difference and I’ll pay you $40(그쪽은 자전거에 50달러를 요구하고 나는 30달러짜리라고 주장하니까 반반 절충해서 40달러 드리는 걸로 합시다)."
