케임브릿지 사전은 'earthy'를 "referring to sex and the human body in a direct way(섹스와 인간의 신체에 관해 직접적으로 언급하는)"라고 정의했다.

"She has an earthy sense of humour(그녀는 저속한 유머 감각의 소유자다)."

콜린스 사전은 'earthy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as earthy, you mean that they are open and direct, and talk about subjects which other people avoid or feel ashamed about(어떤 사람을 earthy하다고 묘사한다면, 그들이 솔직하고 직설적이며, 다른 이들이 피하거나 부끄러움을 느끼는 주제에 대해 이야기한다는 뜻이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'earthy'를 "showing an attitude to sex and the human body that is honest, direct, and sometimes considered not very polite(섹스와 인간 신체에 관해 정직하고, 직접적이고, 때로는 아주 예의 바르지 못하다고 여겨지는 태도를 보여 주는)"라고 풀이했다.
