케임브릿지 사전은 'epitome'을 "the typical or highest example of a stated quality, as shown by a particular person or thing(어떤 특정한 사람이나 사물이 보여 주는, 앞에 언급된 자질의 전형적인 또는 최고의 본보기)"이라고 정의했다.

"Even now in her sixties, she is the epitome of French elegance(그녀는 60대임에도 불구하고 프랑스식 우아함의 완벽한 본보기이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'epitome'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that a person or thing is the epitome of something, you are emphasizing that they are the best possible example of a particular type of person or thing(어떤 사람 또는 사물이 어떤 것의 epitome이라고 말한다면, 그들이 특정 사람 또는 사물에 관해 있을 수 있는 최고의 본보기라는 사실을 강조하는 것ㅅ이다)." 포멀(formal)하고 강조하는(emphasis) 표현이다.

"Maureen was the epitome of sophistication(모린은 세련됨의 완벽한 본보기였다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'epitome'을 "the best possible example of a particular type of person or thing(특정한 종류의 사람 또는 사물에 관해 있을 수 있는 최고의 본보기)"이라고 풀이했다.

"She was the epitome of fashionable elegance(그녀는 유행하는 우아함의 완벽한 본보기였다)."
