케임브릿지 사전은 'dig the/up dirt on sb'를 "to try to discover bad things about someone to stop other people admiring them(다른 이들이 어떤 사람을 존경하는 것을 그만두도록 그 사람에 대한 나쁜 것들을 발견하려고 노력하다)"이라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'dig up dirt on someone'을 "to search for any information about someone that may damage their reputation(어떤 사람의 평판을 실추시킬 수도 있는 정보를 찾다)"이라고 설명했다.
