케임브릿지 사전은 'rung'을 "any of the short bars that form the steps of a ladder (= a device used for climbing), or fig. a level or stage of progress((어느 것이든) 사다리의 계단을 구성하는 짧은 막대기, 또는 발전 수준이나 단계를 비유적으로 이르는 말)"라고 정의했다.

"Community colleges occupy the lower rung of the state’s higher education system(커뮤니티 대학은 주의 고등 교육 체계에서 낮은 단계를 차지한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'rung'을 이렇게 설명했다. "The rungs on a ladder are the wooden or metal bars that form the steps(사다리의  rung은 계단을 구성하는 나무 또는 금속 막대기이다)."

"I swung myself onto the ladder and felt for the next rung(나는 휙 움직여 사다리에 올라타 다음 가로대를 손으로 짚었다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'rung'을 "one of the narrow bars across a ladder, that you put your feet on when you climb up(사다리에 가로로 나 있으며 위로 올라갈 때 발을 걸치는 가느다란 막대기들 중 하나)"라고 풀이했다.
