케임브릿지 사전은 'withering'을 이렇게 정의했다. "A withering look, remark, etc. is one that is intended to make someone feel ashamed(withering한 눈길, 발언 등은 상대가 부끄러움을 느끼도록 의도된 것이다)"

"He said that Lizzie had been drunk at the time and I saw her shoot him a withering glance(그는 리지가 당시에 술에 취해 있었고 그녀가 그의 기를 죽일 만한 눈길을 보내는 걸 내가 봤다고 말했다)."
