케임브릿지 사전은 'extraneous'를 "not directly connected with or related to something(어떤 것과 직접적으로 연결되거나 관련되지 않은)"이라고 정의했다.

"extraneous information(무관한 정보)"

"These questions are extraneous to the issue being discussed(이런 질문들은 지금 우리가 논의하는 이슈와 무관합니다)."

콜린스 사전은 'extraneous'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Extraneous things are not relevant or essential to the situation you are involved in or the subject you are talking about(extraneous한 것들은 당신이 연관된 상황, 또는 당신이 이야기하는 주제와 연관되지 않은, 또는 그것에 필수적이지 않은 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"We ought not to bring in extraneous matters in trying to find a basis for a settlement(우리는 합의의 근간이 되는 것을 찾으려고 노력하는 데 있어 무관한 일들을 끌여들여서는 안 된다)."
