케임브릿지 사전은 'the onus'를 "the responsibility or duty to do something(어떤 것을 해야 하는 책임 또는 의무)"이라고 정의했다.

"The onus is on the landlord to ensure that the property is habitable(그 집이 주거할 만한 상태임을 보장해야 할 책임은 집주인에게 있다)."

"We are trying to shift the onus for passenger safety onto the government(우리는 탑승자가 안전해야 할 책임을 정부에게 옮겨 주려고 노력 중이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'onus'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that the onus is on someone to do something, you mean it is their duty or responsibility to do it(무엇을 해야 할 onus가 누구에게 있다고 말한다면, 그것을 해야 할 의무나 책임이 그들에게 있다는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"If you ordered something, then the onus is on you to pay for it(무언가를 주문했다면, 당신에게는 그것에 대한 대가를 지불할 책임이 있다)." 

"The onus of proof is reversed in libel actions and placed firmly on the defender(증거를 제출해야 할 책임은 명예훼손 사건에서는 뒤바뀌어서, 피고가 그 책임을 진다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'onus를 이렇게 풀이했다. "if the onus is on someone to do something, it is their responsibility or duty to do it(어떤 사람에게 무엇을 해야 할 onus가 있다면, 그것을 해야 할 책임이나 의무는 그들에게 있는 것이다)"
