케임브릿지 사전은 'fawn over/on someone'을 "to praise someone too much and give them a lot of attention that is not sincere, in order to get a positive reaction(긍정적인 반응을 얻어내기 위해 어떤 사람을 과하게 칭찬하고 진심이 아닌 관심을 많이 주다)"이라고 정의했다.

"I hate waiters who fawn over you(너에게 알랑거리는 웨이터들 맘에 안 들어)."

콜린스 사전은 'fawn'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone fawns over a powerful or rich person, you disapprove of them because they flatter that person and like to be with him or her(어떤 사람이 권위가 있거나 부자인 사람에게 fawn over 한다면, 그들이 그 사람에게 아첨하고 그들과 같이 있고 싶어 하기 때문에 이를 못마땅하게 여기는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
