케임브릿지 사전은 'relegate'를 "to put someone or something into a lower or less important rank or position(어떤 사람이나 사물을 낮거나 덜 중요한 지위나 자리에 놓다)"이라고 정의했다.

"She resigned when she was relegated to a desk job(그녀는 사무직으로 강등되자 사임했다)."

"The story was relegated to the middle pages of the paper(그 이야기는 신문 중간에 있는 페이지로 밀려났다)."

콜린스 사전은 'relegate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you relegate someone or something to a less important position, you give them this position(어떤 사람 또는 사물을 덜 중요한 자리로 relegate 하면, 그들에게 그 자리를 주는 것이다)."
