케임브릿지 사전은 'mayhem'을 "a situation in which there is little or no order or control(순서나 통제가 없거나 거의 없는 상황)"이라고 정의했다.

"With 20 kids running around and only two adults to supervise, it was complete mayhem(아이 스무 명이 뛰어다니고 이를 감독할 어른은 두 명뿐이라 완전 아수라장이었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'mayhem'을 이렇게 설명했다. "You use mayhem to refer to a situation that is not controlled or ordered, when people are behaving in a disorganized, confused, and often violent way(사람들이 체계적이지 않고 혼란스러우며 대체로 폭력적이게 행동하는, 통제되거나 정리되지 않은 상황을 가리켜 mayhem이라고 할 수 있다)."

"Their arrival caused mayhem as crowds of people rushed towards them(그들의 도착하자 많은 이들이 그들 쪽으로 뛰어가 아수라장을 일으켰다)." 

"...the economic mayhem that this country's going through now(...이 나라가 현재 겪고 있는 경제적 대혼란)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'mayhem'을 "a very confused situation(아주 혼란스러운 상황)"이라고 풀이했다.

"It was absolute mayhem on the first day of the sales(판매 첫날은 완전 아수라장이었다)."
