케임브릿지 사전은 'canon'을 "the writings or other works that are generally agreed to be good, important, and worth studying(대체로 좋고, 중요하고, 공부할 가치가 있다는 게 합의된 글 또는 다른 작품)"이라고 정의했다.

"He has made it into the canon of English poetry(그는 그것을 영어로 된 시의 정본 목록에 추가했다)."

"She argues that the canon must be opened up to more non-European writers(그녀는 정본이 비(非)유럽계 작가들에게도 활짝 열려야 한다고 주장했다)."

"People sometimes think the classical music canon finishes around 1900(사람들은 때로 클래식 음악의 정본이 1900년대 무렵에 끝난다고 생각한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'canon'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A canon of texts is a list of them that is accepted as genuine or important(텍스트의 canon은 진품으로 또는 중요하다고 인정받는 텍스트의 목록이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

맥밀란 사전은 'canon'을 "all the writing, music etc that is generally accepted as the work of one writer, musician etc(대체로 한 작가, 음악가 등의 작품으로 인정받는 모든 글, 음악, 등)"라고 풀이했다.
