케임브릿지 사전은 'embroil'을 "to cause someone to become involved in an argument or a difficult situation(어떤 사람으로 하여금 언쟁이나 어려운 상황에 휘말리게 하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"She had no desire to embroil herself in lengthy lawsuits with the tabloid newspapers(그녀는 타블로이드 신문과 기나긴 소송에 휘말릴 마음이 없다)."

"The United Nations was reluctant to get its forces embroiled in civil war(UN은 내전에 자체 군사력이 휘말리기를 꺼려 했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'embroil'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone embroils you in a fight or an argument, they get you deeply involved in it(어떤 사람이 당신을 싸움이나 언쟁에 embroil 한다면, 당신으로 하여금 그 안에 깊이 연루되게 하는 것이다)."
