케임브릿지 사전은 'self-effacing'을 "not making yourself noticeable, or not trying to get the attention of other people(스스로를 눈에 띄려고 하지 않거나, 다른 사람들의 관심을 끌려고 노력하지 않는)"

"The captain was typically self-effacing when questioned about the team's successes, giving credit to the other players(주장은 대체적으로 팀의 성공에 대한 질문을 받으면 겸손하게 다른 선수들에게 공을 돌렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'self-effacing'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Someone who is self-effacing does not like talking about themselves or drawing attention to themselves(self-effacing한 사람은 스스로에 대해 이야기하거나 자신에게 관심을 끌기 좋아하지 않는 사람이다)."

"As women we tend to be self-effacing and make light of what we have achieved(여성으로서 우리는 겸손하고 우리가 성취한 것들을 가볍게 여기는 경향이 있다)." 

"...the slightly self-effacing manner adopted by many diplomats(...많은 외교관에게 채택된, 약간 겸손한 태도)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'self-effacing'을 이렇게 풀이했다. "a self-effacing person does not want to be noticed by other people and tends not to talk about their abilities or achievements(self-effacing한 사람은 다른 사람에게 주목받기를 원하지 않고 자신의 능력이나 성취에 대해 이야기하지 않는 경향이 있는 사람이다)"
