케임브릿지 사전은 'harangue'을 "to speak to someone or a group of people, often for a long time, in a forceful and sometimes angry way, especially to persuade them(어떤 사람 또는 한 무리의 사람에게, 대개 오랫동안, 강제적이고 때로 화가 난 상태로, 특히 그들을 설득하기 위해 이야기하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"A drunk in the station was haranguing passers-by(취한 사람이 역에서 지나가는 사람들에게 장광설을 늘어놓고 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'harangue'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone harangues you, they try to persuade you to accept their opinions or ideas in a forceful way(어떤 사람이 당신을 harangue 한다면, 자신의 의견이나 생각을 당신이 받아들이도록 강제적으로 설득하는 것이다)."
