케임브릿지 사전은 'death stare'를 "an angry look that you give someone to show them that you are annoyed or want them to stop doing something(당신이 어떤 사람에게 짜증이 났거나 그들이 하는 일을 관두기를 바란다는 점을 보여 주는, 화가 난 눈길)"이라고 정의했다.
