케임브릿지 사전은 'on the up (and up)'을 이렇게 정의했다. "Someone who is on the up (and up) is honest and can be trusted(on the up (and up)한 사람은 정직하고 신뢰할 수 있는 사람이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'on the up and up'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone is on the up and up, they are honest and sincere(어떤 사람이 on the up and up 하다면, 정직하고 진실된 것이다)."

"I'm a pretty good judge of men. If you're honest and on the up and up, I'll be able to tell it(나는 남자 보는 눈이 꽤 정확해. 네가 정직하고 믿을 만한 사람이라면, 나는 알아볼 수 있어)." 

메리암웹스터 사전은 'on the up and up'을 "honest and legal(정직하고 합법적인)"이라고 풀이했다.

"I don't want to do anything dishonest. Let's keep everything on the up and up(나는 부정직한 일은 아무것도 하고 싶지 않아요. 모든 일을 정직하게 합시다)."
