케임브릿지 사전은 'bellwether'를 "a particular event, result, etc. that usually shows how a more general situation will develop or change(더욱 일반적인 상황이 어떻게 전개되거나 변할 것인지를 보여 주는 특정한 사건, 결과 등)"라고 정의했다.

"The report is viewed as a bellwether for economic trends(그 보고서는 경제 트렌드의 전조로 여겨진다)."

"The shift in mood in the city may be a bellwether of larger trends nationwide(도시 내의 분위기 변화는 더 큰, 전국적인 트렌드의 전조일 수 있다)."

"Missouri is a key Midwest bellwether state that has backed the winning candidate in almost every White House election since 1900(미수리는 1900년 이후 거의 모든 백악관 선거에서 승리한 후보를 뒷받침해 온, 승리의 전조가 되는 중서부의 핵심 주이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'bellwether'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something as a bellwether, you mean that it is an indication of the way a situation is changing(어떤 것을 bellwether라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 어떤 상황이 변해 가는 방식을 나타낸다는 뜻이다)."

"For decades the company was the bellwether of the British economy(수십년간 그 기업은 영국 경제의 전조였다)." 

"IBM is considered the bellwether stock on Wall Street(IBM은 월가에서 전조가 되는 주식으로 여겨진다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'bellwether'를 "something that is used as a sign of what will happen in the future(미래에 일어날 일의 징조로 이용되는 것)"라고 풀이했다.

"University campuses are often the bellwether of change(대학 캠퍼스들은 대개 변화의 전조이다)."

"Ohio is seen as a bellwether state in this election(오하이오는 이번 선거에서 전조가 될 주로 여겨진다)."
