케임브릿지 사전은 'rota'를 "a list of things that have to be done and of the people who will do them(해야 하는 일과 그것을 할 사람들의 목록)"이라고 정의했다.

"a weekly rota(주간 근무표)"

콜린스 사전은 'rota'를 이렇게 설명했다. 대체로 영국식 표현이다. "A rota is a list which gives details of the order in which different people have to do a particular job(rota는 각각의 사람들이 특정한 일을 해야 하는 순서의 세부 사항을 나타내는 목록이다)."

"We have a rota which makes it clear who tidies the room on which day(우리는 누가 어느 날에 방 정리를 하는지 명확하게 보여 주는 당번표가 있다)."

"...the washing-up rota(...빨래 당번표)."

"The tea is prepared on a rota basis by the lady members(차는 여성 회원들에 의해, 당번표에 따라 준비된다)." 

반면에 미국 영어에서는 같은 의미로 roster를 쓴다. 옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'roster'를 "a list showing the tasks that different people have to do at different times within an organization(한 집단 안에서, 각각의 사람들이 다른 시간에 해야 하는 업무들을 보여 주는 목록)"이라고 풀이했다.
