케임브릿지 사전은 'demarcation'을 "a border or a rule that shows the limits of something or how things are divided(어떤 것의 한계 또는 어떤 것이 어떻게 나누어지는지를 보여 주는 경계 또는 규칙)"라고 정의했다.

"In some schools there is little demarcation between subjects (= subjects are not taught separately)(어떤 학교들에선 과목간의 구분이 거의 없다(=과목들을 분리해서 가르치지 않는다))."

"On this map, demarcations between regions are shown with dotted lines(이 지도를 보면 각 지역 사이의 경계가 점선으로 표시돼 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 demarcation'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Demarcation is the establishment of boundaries or limits separating two areas, groups, or things(demacation은 두 지역, 무리, 또는 사물들을 분리하는 경계 또는 한계를 세우는 일이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"...the abrupt demarcation between farmland and moorland(...농지와 황야 지역 간의 갑작스러운 경계)." 

"Talks were continuing about the demarcation of the border between the two countries(두 나라 사이의 국경 경계에 대한 회담은 계속되었다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'demarcation'을 "a line or limit that separates two things, such as types of work, groups of people or areas of land(일, 사람들 무리, 또는 땅 지역 같은 두 가지 것들을 분리하는 선 또는 한계)"라고 풀이했다.

"It was hard to draw clear lines of demarcation between work and leisure(일과 여가 사이의 분명한 경계를 나누기는 어려웠다)."
