케임브릿지 사전은 'skitter'를 "(especially of a small animal, bird, or insect) to move very quickly and lightly((특히 작은 동물, 새, 또는 곤충이) 아주 빠르고 가볍게 움직이다)"라고 정의했다.

"When I lifted the log, there were lots of beetles skittering about/around under it(통나무를 들어올렸을 때, 그 밑에 잽싸게 움직이는 딱정벌레가 많았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'skitter'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something skitters, it moves about very lightly and quickly(어떤 것이 skitter 한다면, 아주 가볍게 재빨리 움직이는 것이다)."
