케임브릿지 사전은 'sidelong'을 "used to refer to a short look at someone or something, moving your eyes to the side, and not looking directly(어떤 사람 또는 사물을, 눈을 옆으로 움직여서 직접적이지 않게 짧게 보는 눈길을 가리킬 때 쓰는 말)"라고 정의했다.

"He gave her a sidelong glance(그는 그녀을 곁눈질로 쳐다보았다)."

"He glanced at her sidelong and smiled(그는 그녀를 곁눈질로 보고 미소 지었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'sidelong'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you give someone a sidelong look, you look at them out of the corner of your eyes(어떤 사람에게 sidelong한 눈길을 주는 것은 눈꼬리 쪽으로 그들을 본다는 뜻이다)."

"She gave him a quick sidelong glance(그녀는 재빨리 그를 곁눈질로 보았다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'sidelong'을 "(of a look) out of the corner of your eye, especially in a way that is secret or disapproving((눈길이) 눈꼬리로, 특히 비밀스럽거나 못마땅해하는 눈길로)"이라고 풀이했다.
