[영어 공부] do someone/sth a disservice(~에게 몹쓸 짓을 하다[피해를 주다])

 

'disservice'는 '해, 폐, 구박, 모진 짓'이라는 뜻이므로 do someone/something a disservice는 그 상대에게 몹쓸 짓, 나쁜 짓을 한다거나 피해를 준다는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'disservice'를 "an action that harms something or someone(어떤 것 또는 어떤 사람에게 피해를 주는 행동)"이라고 정의했다.

"She has done a great disservice to her cause by suggesting that violence is justifiable(그녀는 폭력이 정당화할 수 있다고 제안함으로써 자신의 대의명분에 먹칠을 했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'disservice'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you do someone or something a disservice, you harm them in some way(어떤 사람 또는 어떤 것에 a disservice를 한다면, 어떤 면에서 그들에게 해를 끼치는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"He said the protesters were doing a disservice to the nation(그는 시위자들이 국가에 피해를 끼치고 있다고 말했다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'do someone/something a disservice/do a disservice to someone/something'을 "to do something that makes people’s opinion of someone or something not as good as it should be(어떤 사람 또는 어떤 것에 대한 사람들의 의견을 마땅히 그래야 하는 것보다 좋지 않게 만드는 일을 하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"To describe her as just a journalist is to do her a disservice(그녀를 그저 저널리스트라고만 묘사하는 것은 공정하지 않은 일이다)."

"He is doing himself a disservice by allowing his songs to be so badly performed(자기 노래를 그렇게 형편없게 공연하도록 허락하다니 자기 얼굴에 먹칠하는 거나 다름없다)."
