케임브릿지 사전은 'demote'를 "to lower someone or something in rank or position(누구 또는 어떤 것의 계급이나 지위를 낮추다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The captain was demoted (to sergeant) for failing to fulfil his duties(대위는 임무를 수행하지 못해 병장으로 강등되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'demote'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone demotes you, they give you a lower rank or a less important position than you already have, often as a punishment(누군가 당신을 demote 한다면, 대개 처벌로써 당신이 이미 가진 것보다 낮은 계급 또는 덜 중요한 지위를 당신에게 주는 것이다)."
