케임브릿지 사전은 'lenient'를 "not as severe or strong in punishment or judgment as would be expected(처벌이나 판결이 기대되는 것만큼 가혹하거나 강력하지 않은)"라고 정의했다.

"They believe that judges are too lenient with terrorist suspects(그들은 판사들이 그 테러리스트 용의자들에게 너무 관대하다고 믿는다)."

"In view of the quantity of drugs involved, 16 years was the most lenient sentence (= punishment) the judge could impose(이 일과 연루된 약물의 양을 보았을 때, 16년이 판사가 부과할 수 있는 가장 가벼운 형이다)."
