케임브릿지 사전은 'scam'을 "an illegal plan for making money, especially one that involves tricking people(특히 사람들을 속이는 일을 포함하는, 돈을 벌려는 불법적인 계획)"이라고 정의했다.

"an insurance scam(보험 사기)"

콜린스 사전은 'scam'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A scam is an illegal trick, usually with the purpose of getting money from people or avoiding paying tax(scam은 대개 사람들에게 돈을 얻어 내거나 납세를 피하려는 목적을 가진 불법적인 사기이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"They believed they were participating in an insurance scam, not a murder(그들은 자신이 살인이 아니라 보험 사기에 참여하는 거라고 믿었다)." 

"The duo set up a scam to settle their respective debts(그 이인조는 각자의 빚을 청산하기 위해 사기를 짰다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'scam'을 "a dishonest plan, especially for getting money(특히 돈을 얻어 내기 위한 부정직한 계획)"라고 풀이했다.
