케임브릿지 사전은 'catfish'를 "someone who pretends on social media to be someone different, in order to trick or attract other people(타인을 속이거나 유혹하기 위한 목적으로 소셜 미디어상에서 다른 사람인 척하는 사람)"이라고 정의했다.

"Online scammers and catfish usually have broad profile interests so that they can appeal to as many people as possible(온라인 사기꾼들과 거짓 정체성을 꾸며내는 사람들은 대개 가능한 한 많은 사람들에게 어필할 수 있도록 넓은 프로파일 관심사를 가진다)."

콜린스 사전은 'catfish'를 "a person who creates a false identity on social media in order to lure someone into establishing a relationship(누군가를 유혹해 관계를 맺기 위해 소셜 미디어상에서 거짓된 정체성을 만들어 내는 사람)"

맥밀란 사전은 'catfish'를 "to trick someone into having an online relationship by adopting a fake identity(가짜 정체성을 만들어 내어 온라인상에서 누군가와 관계를 맺다)"라고 풀이했다. 

"People who catfish others usually make up fake lives so they can be as extravagant as they want to be(온라인에서 사람을 유혹하기 위해 거짓 정체성을 꾸며내는 사람들은 자신이 되고 싶은 만큼 화려해 보이도록 거짓 인생을 지어낸다)."
