케임브릿지 사전은 'resume'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If an activity resumes, or if you resume it, it starts again after a pause(한 행동이 resume한다면, 또는 당신이 resume한다면, 멈췄다가 다시 시작하는 것이다)."

"Normal services will be resumed in the spring(정규 서비스는 봄에 다시 시작될 것이다)."

"He stopped to take a sip of water and then resumed speaking(그는 물을 한 모금 마시려고 멈췄다가 다시 말을 시작했다)."

"The talks are due to resume today(그 회담은 오늘 재개될 예정이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'resume'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you resume an activity or if it resumes, it begins again(어떤 행동을 resume하거나 그것을 resume한다면, 다시 시작하는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"After the war he resumed his duties at Emmanuel College(전쟁 이후 그는 에마뉴엘 대학에서 자신의 의무를 재개했다)."

"The search is expected to resume early today(그 수색은 오늘 아침에 재개될 것으로 기대된다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'resume'을 "to start something again after stopping temporarily(잠시 멈추었던 후 다시 시작하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"Shall we resume after lunch?(점심식사 이후에 재개할까요?)"

"After saying that, Tom resumed his work and ignored us completely(그 말을 하고 나서 톰은 하던 일을 계속했고 우리를 완전히 무시했다)."
