케임브릿지 사전은 'be on the lookout for sth/sb'를 "to search for something or someone(어떤 것 또는 사람을 찾아보다)"이라고 정의했다.

"I'm always on the lookout for interesting new recipes(나는 언제나 흥미로운 새 레시피를 찾아본다)."

콜린스 사전은 'keep a lookout/be on the lookout'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you are keeping a lookout for something or are on the lookout for it, you are alert and careful about it, either because you do not want to miss it or because it will be unpleasant or harmful and you need to avoid it(keep a look out for 하거나 be on the lookout for 한다면, 그것을 놓치고 싶어 하지 않거나 그것이 불쾌하거나 유해해서, 그것을 피하고 싶기 때문에 그것에 대해 기민하고 주의를 기울이는 것이다)."
