어떤 사람이 자신의 분수에 넘치게 나서거나 버릇없이 굴면 '기어오른다'라고 하는데, 이럴 때 'put sb in their place' 해 주어야 한다.

'기어올랐'으니까 다시 제자리로 내려가게 해 주는 거라고 생각하면 이 표현을 이해하기 쉽다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'put sb in their place'를 "to tell or show someone that they are less important than they thought(어떤 사람이 자기 생각만큼 중요한 존재가 아니라는 것을 말하거나 보여 주다)"라고 정의했다.
