케임브릿지 사전은 'have a chip on your shoulder'를 "to seem angry all the time because you think you have been treated unfairly or feel you are not as good as other people(불공평한 대우를 받았거나 다른 사람들보다 못하다고 느끼기 때문에 늘 화가 난 것처럼 보이다)"이라고 정의했다.

"He's got a chip on his shoulder about not having been to university(그는 대학을 안 나온 얘기만 나오면 발끈한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'a chip on one's shoulder'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone has a chip on their shoulder, you think that they feel inferior or that they believe they have been treated unfairly(어떤 사람이 have a chip on their shoulder 한다면, 그들은 자신이 열등하다고 느끼거나 불공평한 대우를 받았다고 믿는다는 뜻이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.
